Disappointed with the amount of breastmilk you're pumping? Finding the Perfect Flange Fitting: How the Right Flange Fitting Improves Comfort and Milk Flow

Why Flange Fitting Matters for breast Pumping Parents

If you’re using a breast pump, the flange (also called the breast funnel) might seem like a small part—but it plays a huge role in your comfort and milk flow. The right flange size and shape ensures your nipple moves freely without rubbing, allowing your pump to work efficiently and comfortably.

Pumping should feel like a gentle tud or nothing at all, using the correct flange fit, size and shape will support this.

As a lactation consultant in North Wales, I often meet parents in Anglesey, Gwynedd, and Conwy who experience pain or low milk output simply because their flange size isn’t quite right. Once we find their perfect fit, pumping becomes easier, more comfortable, and far more productive.

Benefits of a Correct Flange Fitting

Getting your flange size right can make a world of difference:

  • Comfort: Pump without pain, pinching, or soreness.

  • Better Milk Flow: Efficient suction helps you express more milk.

  • Healthy Nipples: Prevents friction, swelling, and damage.

  • Protected Milk Supply: Comfortable pumping encourages consistency.

  • Confidence: Feel empowered and supported in your feeding journey.

If you’ve been feeling frustrated with your pump, or your sessions are uncomfortable, a professional flange fitting consultation can help.

Signs Your Flange Fits Properly

A well-fitting flange should:

  • Allow your nipple to move freely in the tunnel.

  • Feel comfortable during the entire session.

  • Leave your nipple its normal colour and shape afterward.

  • Help you express milk efficiently without discomfort.

If you notice pain, swelling, friction, or reduced milk flow, your flange size may need adjusting.

How to Measure Your Flange Size

Many breast pumps come with a “standard” 24mm flange, but this doesn’t the majority of people.

To find your ideal fit:

  1. Measure the hight and width of your nipple using a ruler or flexible tape, take the average measure to find your starting flange size.

  2. Test and adjust based on comfort and milk flow.

For example, if your nipple measures 17mm, a 16mm or 18mm flange may fit best. Sometime going down further works. if you go to small, nothing will happen, your nipple just won't move, pain or discomfort usually comes from a flange that's too big.

If you’re using wearable pumps or inserts, sizes can vary slightly—professional guidance can make all the difference.

Milk will start to flow within seconds with the correct fit.
